Dear Crabby— The Wallflower

Dear Crabby,

I’m a first semester freshman, and away from home for the first time. I was really excited about coming to college and being able to reinvent myself. I was always quiet and kind of nerdy in high school, and nobody paid a lot of attention to me. Now that I’m here, I feel like I’m still the quiet nerdy girl. I don’t go out a lot, and when I do, I tend to wander off and keep to myself. I don’t know how to be the life of the party. How do I start being more outgoing?

Sincerely,

The Wallflower

Dear Wallflower,

Let me say this first—There is nothing wrong with being quiet and nerdy. I’m a quiet nerd, and love every minute. I’m introverted, and would much rather spend an evening watching Netflix with my dog than being out in a crowd. Having said that, if you want to be more outgoing, try talking to one new person a day. Compliment someone’s shoes. Ask about a book you see someone reading. Just strike up a conversation in the dining hall. You can also take a public speaking class. The more you do this, the easier it will become. You’ll be the life of the party before you know it.
