Making Your Own Traditions

By: Sophia Romero

College students are transitioning and changing into different roles as they progress into adulthood and out of adolescence. Although it is wonderful to keep old traditions alive, it is also important to make new traditions and celebrate with family and friends. As we cross the threshold of adulthood, we are moving out of our college houses and starting homes of our own, or moving across the country for a new job or internship. It is easy to revert to childhood and recreate those cherished memories, however, it is just as special to create new and unique memories that are special to you. Here are ways to create your own family traditions on your terms.

Host a Friendsgiving/Family Thanksgiving: This is a great way to start making your own traditions; by hosting an event at your home, the schedule, the menu, and the décor is completely up you!

Put New Ornaments on the Tree: Family traditions are usually centralized around the tree and putting ornaments together as a family unit. By purchasing new ornaments and a new tree, it is a great way to start your own tradition with your family, or just your significant other.

Take Time for Yourself this Holiday Season: As an ambivert, this practice is crucial in my everyday well-being. I try to take time for myself in the evening and on the weekends, so I do not socially burn out. During the holidays it is easy to get stressed with family obligations and endless to-do lists. However, by taking 20 minutes out of your day devoted to yourself— you will be ready to conquer the holidays.

Revert to Childhood Memories: Perhaps there is a tradition you cannot let go of yet. A tradition I always enjoyed was driving around different neighborhoods and looking at the Christmas lights on different houses. If this was not a tradition practiced by your family, then it is great to incorporate in your traditions.

Watch your Favorite Holiday Movies: Holiday practices are different for each family. In my family, it is just my mom and I, and we have a quiet Thanksgiving at home. We eat our meals, watch The Godfather and Gone with the Wind, and then we nap. Whether it’s Harry Potter, It’s a Wonderful Life, or National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, make sure to pop in your favorite movie this holiday season.

Invent a New Recipe to Share During the Holidays: Each family has a signature dish that they have at each holiday meal, instead of gravy my family has red chile. Create a new recipe that you have always wanted to try and bring/make the dish and present at it at Thanksgiving or at Christmas.
