Is the cannabis industry getting out of hand?

By Luis Larios

When you think of cannabis the first thing you think of is drug dealer, however, in recent times the word cannabis has been more of a topic of relief and a better way of life. However, for another group of the population, it is still very much what it was a decade ago, an “illegal” practice that could bring property value down, as well as steering the young demographic into that part of life, which often ends up in a crime career with the law.

There have been many dispensaries being built in any city and town in order to handle the clientele they have acquired. However, the more conservative crowd has thought about this as an eye sore. Something that should not be happening, especially when at every corner there is one of these dispensaries. Just in the town of Hobbs, NM there is a total of twenty nine dispensaries for a population total of almost forty one thousand, and even in other smaller towns there is at least one of those dispensaries. Vaughn, NM even has a dispensary, and they have a total population of less than two hundred people.

Many people speculate that it is only a money laundering scheme in order to avoid taxes at a federal level, but others think it is just a growing business that will just continue to grow exponentially, and bringing many more jobs into a town that could be struggling to have a good stream of revenue to stay afloat. With this type of business being mainly a cash venture, the employees oftentimes only get the pay and at times no benefits at all, however, for a bigger establishment, those couple of things could be totally different, and could include a retirement plan and even insurance through the company itself.

This industry is often looked down upon, however, it has helped people relieve pain and often keep the mental health of people by using the cannabis industry as their crutch in order to be a productive member of society, rather than to rely on crime in order to simply survive. The cannabis industry has been and continues to make a big impact in everyday lives, from making a contribution to the employment side of a community, all the way to maintaining the population in some sort of pain free lives and even more relaxed than what they can be with pharmaceuticals.
