Let the Leaves Fall: Back to School at ENMU

Welcome back to another semester at the wonderful campuses of ENMU! While many of you may be disheartened that summer is over and it’s time to hit the books, I can assure you that there are events taking place throughout the semester that will wipe those blues away.

First of all, while national football does not officially start until September 22nd, ENMU football breaks the ice on September 6th at New Mexico Highlands University. September 13th is the first home game, during which the Greyhounds will be battling it out with Adams State University. GO GREYHOUNDS!

The Zias will also start their volleyball season on Friday, September 5th, when they go up against the University of Colorado Mountain Lions in Colorado Springs. First home game for the Zias will be September 23rd against the Midwestern State Mustangs. Ladies, show the world how a spike is really done! Both volleyball and football are wonderful opportunities for the community to come together and support not only the university but also many of its students as well. It’s a great chance to meet people, make friends and have a good time.

ENMU is also offering a variety of cultural events to broaden people’s horizons and help break the ice. Eastern has always prided itself on giving students many opportunities to learn about other cultures, religions, and lifestyles. From mid-September to mid-October ENMU will be focusing on Hispanic Heritage Month. On September 16th there will be an Independence Day Buffet serving a variety of Hispanic foods from 11:00a.m.-1:00p.m. in the Campus Union building. On September 22nd, dance your way into cultural awareness with Argentina’s History through Tango in the Sandia room at 2:00p.m. To round out the month, on September 29th a presentation on the history and significance of the piñata will be held in the Pecos Room! Please visit ENMU’s Hispanic Heritage Month calendar for a full schedule of these and other exciting and educational events.

Students at ENMU have many other opportunities to become culturally aware simply by paying attention to who their fellow classmates are. Many of our students come from places as far-flung as Africa, India, China, and Spain. Don’t be shy! Go out and meet people — after all, that’s what college is all about.

There are many other events occurring on the Portales campus, such as movie nights, comedians, plays, and musical events. October 8th at 7:00p.m. in Buchanan Hall the Music department will host the Fall Jazz Concert, which is sure to kick up some heels. The Holiday Concert (always a favorite of mine) will be held on December 4th at 7:00p.m. From the wonderful selections of orchestral music to caroling at the end, the holiday concert has a way of melting the heart and sparking anyone’s holiday spirit.

Finally, let me remind you, ENMU students: take one or more of these opportunities to throw away your summer-is-over blues and don’t be afraid to let the leaves fall. This is the time to discover something new about yourselves and each other. Let some of the events listed above enrich your lives and education.
