Where Are They Going? Senior Spotlight: Megan West

Name: Megan West
Major: Psychology and Sociology w/ Criminal Justice minor

  1. Tell us a little about yourself:
I am from Clovis, New Mexico and graduated from Clovis High School in 2017. I’ve lived in the area for 19 years, but I’m actually from New Jersey due to being a military child. I love dancing and have been doing it since I was 3 years old. I currently work at the university in the Office of Housing and Residence Life and have for 2 years.
  2. What are your plans post-graduation?
Due to COVID-19, not much.. But I will be celebrating my 21st birthday in June and (hopefully) attending the Hella Mega Tour with Fall Out Boy, Green Day, and Weezer in July.
  3. Do you plan on going to grad school? If so, where? And to study what?
I have been accepted to and am going to New Mexico State University for their Clinical Mental Health Counseling program. After that, I want to continue to get my doctorate degree in either clinical or counseling psychology
  4. What is your dream job? Why?
I want to be a clinical mental health counselor, ideally in a rural area such as this [Portales]. I know first-hand how limited mental health resources are in this area, and I want to provide my own services to add another option for people in need.
  5. What is one thing that you’ve learned from the university?
I’ve learned that community matters and that in the end we all support each other to get through anything.
  6. What is some advice that you would give upcoming students?
You have time!  I came into the university double majoring in Psychology and Forensic Science with an emphasis in Chemistry before I quickly realized chemistry was not for me.  Don’t feel locked down in your choice for your first semester or two. Find your passion!
  7. Who was your favorite professor at ENMU? Why?
This is tough, and I have to draw it at a tie. Dr. Waldo because she has been the most amazing advisor I could ever ask for and has given me life advice beyond just what classes to take.  Dr. Gill because she has helped prepare me for a life of academia and is an amazing research advisor. One professor for each major I suppose!
  8. What’s your best memory at ENMU?
My best memory is probably more of a collection.  The two years I was able to do Eastern in Action with my psychology club, Pavlov’s Hounds, were unforgettable.  Helping the community out was satisfying in itself, but doing it with friends was ten times better in every way.
  9. Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?
I see myself likely still in school!  After I get my master’s degree, I want to get my doctorate.  Even if it’s not right away, I rather not put it off!  I’ll be in school for quite a long time at this rate.
