The Tough Choice Of A Community

By Luis Larios

What will a simple choice that a community has power over affect over the course of a political term? City commissioner elections for the town of Lovington New Mexico are quickly approaching, and with a couple of options to choose from, the result of this election could improve the town or keep it the same.

Having this choice even when it is a presidential election is always a tough choice to do, but for others it is often the easiest things to do, not because they agree with the views the candidates have, but often times it is because they have known the candidates for some time, afterall it is a small town of 11,600 people as of 2024. This population size, it is often unavoidable that everyone could in theory know everyone, or at least the majority of people, this especially when those candidates are involved in school activities for their kids as well as the booster clubs within the sports.

While this is a great way to already have a character view of the candidates, the community could in theory have already grown up with them. This all makes a choice that could be tough a little more easy to make, however, this also makes every choice biased towards the qualifications of the candidate. Not because they are not qualified, but because the election could be made purely by the friends and family of the candidates and not by what they are promising to do.

Election times, whether it is for presidential candidates or even candidates that could potentially affect your way of living in your community is a tough choice to make. This choice will not make a difference from one day to the next, but as time goes on and up until the middle of their term is when the changes will be noticeable. The choice fully falls on the hands of the public and those who are allowed to vote. How would you cast your vote, will you cast it by the knowledge of the candidates you already have or by the visions the candidates are campaigning with?
