A Campus Tradition with Heart
On a crisp November morning, the Eastern New Mexico University campus comes alive with the sound of sneakers hitting the pavement and laughter echoing across the fields. It’s the annual Turkey Trot, a beloved tradition that blends fitness, fun, and philanthropy. The students, faculties, alumni, and community members gather not just to run—but to give back.
What Makes the Turkey Trot Special?
Held on the ENMU Portales campus, the event offers something for everyone:
- 1.5-Mile Family Fun Walk for those who want a relaxed pace.
- 5K Run for competitive spirits, complete with awards for top finishers.
But the Turkey Trot is more than a race. It’s a celebration of community, featuring arts and crafts, entertainment booths, and even a dog rescue station. The participants bring their holiday spirit and donations of non-perishable food and pet supplies to support the ENMU Food Pantry, helping fight food insecurity among students and families.
Running for a Reason
Every step taken during the Turkey Trot makes a difference. The proceeds and donations go directly to the ENMU Food Pantry, with fundraising goals between $1,000 and $2,500. This year, the event also welcomes local businesses as sponsors, strengthening ties between the university and the community.
Voices from the Track
The families from Portales and Clovis join in, turning the trot into a festive outing. Alumni return to campus, lacing up their shoes to support a cause close to their hearts. A small business owner from Hair Haven in Portales named Brenda Landeros says, “As many families in the city struggling due to the government shutdown, even a small act of kindness can make a difference.” She said that her modest donation, though simple, carries hope—a gesture meant to bring comfort and a little joy to children who need it most.
Why We Love It
The Turkey Trot promotes health and wellness, builds school spirit, and reminds us of the power of gratitude. In a season centered on giving thanks, ENMU’s Turkey Trot proves that generosity can be active and joyful. “Lace up, give back, and celebrate the season—ENMU’s Turkey Trot is more than a race; it’s a movement.”
