Choosing a Major is Tough, Here’s Some Advice:

By Gabrielle Smith

With many areas of study to explore here at Eastern New Mexico University it can become an overwhelming experience to choose a subject to major in. Even after settling on a particular subject there can still be a horrifying feeling of being unsure which can continue to lurk in the back of the mind overtime when choosing impulsively. It is important that you do not pick a major halfheartedly.

Vee Morgan, a senior currently majoring in English has also struggled in the past to find her true passion. After exploring her interests in other areas, finding that none of them satisfied her one hundred percent, she was still determined to move forward.

After some time, she finally found inspiration in the subject of English and chose this subject as her final destination. She chose English as her major because it was something that had always interested her, and it also helped that she naturally excelled in this subject.

She mentioned that she selected English as her major since it allowed her to gain further insight into topics that interest her. Morgan also wanted to learn about topics she had never discovered.

“My favorite part is all the interesting things I get to learn about! I’d also say that the constant flow of papers and writing is the most challenging, but it can also be very rewarding,” she said.

Of course, with any major there is without a doubt going to be the ups and downs, but she stated that she would not trade it for anything else.

For future individuals who are considering English as their major,

“Some advice would be not to let the amount of homework or papers deter you. It’s a really great program and it has its pros and cons, but I don’t think I’d change my degree ever,” she said.

Vee has loved her experience as an English major and considers furthering her educational career by attending graduate school to receive a master’s degree, once graduated this spring.

It can be a big challenge to find the major of your dreams. Once you do, it can be an inspiring and enriching experience. Ensure to keep an open mind and take the time to engage in all that ENMU as to offer. Eventually selecting a major will not be a major problem. Hopefully this bit of insight from a senior who has gone through that struggle can captivate your perspective and ease the nerves or pressure of deciding on a major.
